Metropolitan Methodist Hospital Expansion | San Antonio, TX
Metropolitan Methodist Hospital is a 330-bed hospital located in downtown San Antonio, TX. As is fairly common with urban hospitals, the campus consists of a number of different buildings, with access points from multiple streets, and internal connections at various points throughout the facility. Wayfinding is not intuitive, parking is spread out, and patient waiting areas are limited and scattered. The focus of this project is the improvement of overall wayfinding and more direct access to clinical services throughout the existing facility. Outside of clinical services, wayfinding is one the most critical aspects of space planning and construction for medical facilities. This project will include a completely new infill of approximately 18,000SF of current outdoor space between the existing patient tower and the existing clinical services tower. The Infill will house an information desk, café, children’s play area, public restrooms, the Emergency Department registration, and most importantly, a strong internal connection tying all existing services together and providing a single entry point for the facility.
Once the Infill project is complete, the spaces left empty by the relocated services will allow for needed expansion to the Emergency Department, Rehab Medicine, Admitting, and the Administrative Suite. This project will provide Metropolitan Methodist Hospital an opportunity to present a new “face” to the local community and surrounding neighborhoods, with more direct and user-friendly access to the critical services it provides to patients, visitors, and staff.
